creating space through the concept of gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), integrating multiple digital and analog art forms and sensory elements into a complete and holistic artwork that transcends traditional boundaries of architecture, film, furniture, science, music, and other mediums.
Throughout history, architecture has consistently adapted by adjusting its program to the prevailing time while preserving its physical form. Presently, it appears challenging for buildings to meet the intricate demands of the contemporary, rapidly evolving world. They are no longer permanent, as they undergo demolition and reconstruction. Diverging from the concept of "temporary," future architecture will evolve in a "impermanent" fashion, encompassing not only structural aspects but also adopting a philosophical approach. The pavilion structure is seen as the most appropriate means to accomplish this.
Both "In-Vitro" and "In-Situ" are scientific terms, with "In-Vitro" referring to a subject isolated from its surroundings, like in a petri dish, while "In-Situ" pertains to a subject specific to its site and situation. I aim to reconsider the relationship between artwork and space by curating the space soley for the central piece. The space brewed from the artwork allows me to create a microcosm for the installed artwork.
While parametric design in architecture was initially anticipated as a significant advancement, it has yet to substantially impact our daily lives and the world at large. The custom nature of every element in parametric design has resulted in inefficiencies in construction cost, time, and methodology. I aim to overcome these limitations by adopting a strategic approach to parametric design, utilizing common materials like single-length pipes—thus introducing the concept of "Common Parametric."
Jeffrey Jehwan Kim is a spatial artist whose practice is grounded in a sustained engagement with architecture and space, developed through long-term, research-driven inquiry. Working through a multidisciplinary methodology that spans architecture, video, furniture, science, and music, he approaches space as an experimental field in which material, perception, and computational systems intersect. His work consistently dissolves the boundary between digital and analog processes, treating traditional media not as static forms but as active components within evolving spatial systems.
Over the past several years, Kim has developed a working methodology that situates generative artificial intelligence within established domains governed by distinct physical, material, and conceptual constraints. Rather than using AI as a representational or image-producing tool, he embeds generative systems into spatial frameworks and observes how their behavior shifts when confronted with unfamiliar rules and conditions. Through repeated cycles of testing, implementation, and spatial realization, his practice forms an ongoing dialogue between the operational logic of AI and existing fields of knowledge, revealing both the limits and adaptive capacities of generative systems while expanding new possibilities for collaboration between artificial intelligence, material systems, and physical space.
